I know we’re starting to sound like a broken record, but we really do mean it when we say: Mobile is the key for future small business growth and prosperity. However, did you know that 79% of Australian small business websites aren’t currently optimised for mobile web browsing? Let that marinate for a moment. The figure is downright absurd, especially considering we live in a time period defined by the power and influence of the mobile device and digital, social communication.

In today’s business climate, consumers purchase in patterns they’ve never explored before. Smartphone penetration has risen to 52% of the population and these smartphone owners are becoming increasingly reliant on their devices. 58% access the Internet every day on their smartphone and most never leave home without it. Businesses that are pro active, and elect to make mobile a centralised focus on marketing driven media benefit from the opportunity to engage the new, constantly connected consumer.

Perhaps the most telling statistic regarding the imapct of mobile websites is the following: A whopping 80% of mobile users abandon a mobile website on their device if they have a poor experience. When we determine and fully understand the correlation between this statistic and that of 90% of positive and enjoyable mobile searches result in an action of visiting a business premises or making a purchase, we can begin to truly appreciate the important of a mobile web strategy for our small businesses.

If we take a good look at the image above, you’ll note that the website you’re currently browsing (yep, that’s us!) appears both similar yet different on seperate devices. The images to the right display our website as seen on an Apple iPhone and the images to the left,  as seen on an Apple iMac. You’ll note that for the mobile device, the content is compressed and displayed in a slightly different layout. This is done to optimise the user experience (or UX as those tech-savvy folk like to call it!) on a smaller device. The content is still readible and easily accessible, yet displayed in a manner that enhances the overall experience for the average mobile user. Ensuring that mobile users are presented with the same content in a simplified fashion is key to providing your customers with a gratifying experience.

So go ahead.. Log onto on your mobile device and compare the design elements for yourself. Take note of the simplified navigation on the mobile optimised version of the website and be mindful of deliberate alterations on content positioning and linked buttons. Everything is done for a reason! 🙂
